Hospital San Jaime to install first Mobetron in Spain
[April 2004]
Intraop Medical, Inc. announced today that the first Mobetron in Spain will be installed later
this year at Hospital San Jaime in Torrevieja, Spain. Hospital San Jaime is a 100 bed private
hospital located in Torrevieja, a popular retirement community for northern Europeans on the
Mediterranean coast. This modern hospital serves not only its large Spanish population, but a
diverse international community as well. While San Jaime is a general purpose hospital, it
specializes in the treatment of cancer. The Oncology team (Plataforma de Oncologia) integrates
different modalities to provide patients a multidisciplinary approach for cancer treatment.
The Director of the Cancer Program at San Jaime and the Chief of Medical Oncology is Dr. Antonio
Brugarolas. Dr. Brugarolas came to San Jaime from the University of Navarra in Pamplona where,
under his guidance, he helped pioneer intraoperative radiation therapy (“IORT”) for cancer treatment
in Europe. “Some of the more promising applications we found for IORT in Pamplona were its integrated
use with chemotherapy and external beam radiation therapy for rectal, gynecological cancer, sarcomas,
and lung cancer,” says Dr. Brugarolas. “We plan to use the Mobetron to provide IORT treatments for
patients with these and other malignant disease”.
Dr. Ignacio Azinovic, the Director of Radiation Oncology at Hospital San Jaime, one of the world’s
leading IORT practitioners, says, “We are very pleased to be adding IORT to our cancer treatment
armamentarium. We have already seen several patients who would benefit from IORT as part of their
treatment. In Pamplona, we had to transport the patient from the operating room to the radiation
department in the middle of surgery to give the IORT. Here in San Jaime with the Mobetron, we will
be able to give the IORT right in the OR which will make the treatment much easier to deliver.”
Donald Goer, President and CEO of Intraop Medical, Inc. remarked that “It is a great opportunity
for the Company to have a Mobetron system in the hands of some of the most experienced IORT practitioners
in Europe. We look forward to working closely with Hospital San Jaime, Doctors Azinovic and Brugarolas,
and their colleagues, to help establish mobile IORT technology in Europe and to develop additional IORT
applications.”
The Mobetron is distributed in Spain by Bioterra, S.L.
