University Hospitals of Cleveland Completes First Year of Clinical Use with Mobetron

[July 2000]  The University Hospitals of Cleveland (UHHS) has completed its first year of clinical operation with the Mobetron. In their first year, the hospital treated over 40 patients for sarcomas, colorectal cancer, cervical cancer, head and neck cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer and a variety of other cancers.

These IORT treatments have been well documented, including the patient position on the surgical table during the surgery, the location of the tumor, and the time needed to set up the patient and deliver the IORT treatment with the Mobetron. UHHS has developed appropriate procedures to smoothly integrate Mobetron-delivered IORT into their surgical schedule, including procedures for training of personnel, radiation safety and sterilization. UHHS has documented their experience to assist other institutions considering a similar Mobetron program and has submitted two publications on their experience with the Mobetron to the nationally prominent nursing journal of the Association of Perioperative Nurses.

In 2001, UHHS plans to initiate studies on the use of IORT for the treatment of lung cancer and early stage breast cancer. The Mobetron and IORT have become an important part of the cancer treatment and research program at UHHS.
